John Clemenza on the Health Benefits of Surfing

Surfing is a sport which is enjoyed by thousands of people around the world, with some even doing it as a career. If you do live by the coast and there are some good waves near you, then getting out and going surfing would be a great move in terms of looking after your health. Surfing is not only a very fun sport which will be sure to put a smile on your face, it is also a wonderful way of exercising and it can provide you with a great number of other health benefits.

We spoke with Dr John Clemenza about the health benefits of surfing, something which he has written about on his blog, check it out for more information. Let’s take al look then, at the health benefits which you can count on when you go surfing.

Cardio

Surfing is a great form of cardio which can greatly help you with regards to your overall levels of fitness and condition. The chief reason why surfing is good cardio is because of the amount of paddling which is required to not only get out to the waves, but also on your repeated approaches. Just 1 hour of surfing can burn up to 500 calories through paddling alone, more than enough reason to give this sport a try.

Strengthening

Surfing utilities many of the body’s muscle groups and can greatly help you to increase the strength of your body on the whole. Standing and balancing on the board works out your legs and does great work for your core as you are tightening it in order to stay balanced. In terms of strengthening your legs, this comes from repeatedly lifting yourself up on the board, as well as using the legs to manoeuvre the board itself.

Skincare

The health benefits of surfing are not just based around the exercise which you are doing, but also the environment in which you are doing them. The fact that you will be spending so much time in sea water means that your skin will reap the benefits. Seawater is packed with nutrients and minerals which can help to cleanse and reinvigorate your skin. Seawater is also rich in salt which is excellent for helping to remove dead skin from your body, leaving your skin looking fresh and clean.

Destress

Spending a great amount of time outdoors has been proven to help you to destress, and it doesn’t get more outdoorsy than paddling through the sea under the open sky. You will feel the relaxing benefits of surfing after doing so for just a week or two, and many say that their time on the surfboard helps them to organise their thoughts, and make better decisions. We should all be looking to get outside more often, and surfing is one of the best ways to do just that.
